The Light

Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world:
he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. John 8:12
The icicles hanging from sheds and barns and houses brought opportunities to see prisms of light against snow covered ground. The light shining through made everything a little brighter. The rainbows called attention to the light though they were made up of all the colors.

Our lives are like those multi-faceted icicles. Each moment of each day gives us an opportunity  to let the Light of Jesus shine through us. Our days may move from one activity to another. We may organize our days with multi-colored highlighters. Just as there is no black in a rainbow, there should be no moments of darkness in our lives; no anger, no hate, no backbiting.

The sparkle in the icicle prisms sometimes causes a blinding twinkle, so our lives should be so full of the Light that it overwhelms the darkness around us.

Lord, this year, may I be Your light in a dark world.

Hey Kids:

Jesus is the Light of the world.

In the cold clear days of winter, look for ways to see the sun's light reflected in creation.

Take a moment to examine an icicle.
When you hold it in your hand, no light escapes. It's surrounded by darkness.
The heat from your hand will cause the icicle to melt away.

When we allow the darkness of the world to surround us in sadness and hate and anger, we have a more difficult time letting Christ's light shine through us.
The darkness of the world will melt away our joy.

This year, be the light in our dark world.
Blessings for a Happy New Year,

Gail

Celebrate and Worship

But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me:
for of such is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 19:14

Children never cease to amaze me. The last week of school we celebrated Hanukkah and Christmas around the world. We compared the customs of other countries to the way we celebrate Christmas. We played dreidel games and used our five senses to enjoy the sweet smells and tastes of Christmas.

On the last day, we traced and cut stars, adding streamers and handles for our parade. One of our teachers is from the Philippines, so we decided to do a Filipino parade, winding through the classroom singing and searching for the Christ child. I had placed our cradle and one of the baby boys from our home living center in a corner at the front of the classroom. Nothing had changed about the look of the baby or the cradle.

The children knew that a Filipino parade was to symbolize the wise men looking for the Christ child. As the parade came to an end, the children began to squeal and kneel down. "The baby Jesus! The baby Jesus!" I understood the wonder and worship in a child's heart.

May we all see Christmas with the eyes of a child this year.
Blessings,
Gail

The Twelve Days of Nativity

Have you started any new traditions with your family this year? My daughter in law and her family are beginning what they are calling The Twelve Days of Nativity. Her grandmother left a wish to share the gospel through the nativity secretly. This year they are trying to fulfill that wish. They bought 2 nativity sets. One is for an elderly widower in our church. The other is for a family not currently in church. Each day a piece of the nativity set and corresponding scripture is secretly left at the home of the family being gifted. I thought it was such a wonderful idea that I would share it with you.

You may begin any time during December. If you begin early, the family will have the complete nativity set to enjoy and remind them of the true meaning of Christmas during the days leading up to Christmas.  If your family and friends celebrate the coming of the wise men in January, you may want to time the gifting so that the shepherds come on Christmas and the wise men come later. A third option may be to finish the gifting on Christmas Eve.

You should be able to copy and print the scriptures from this post or paste them into a document that you can save from year to year.

Day 1 - With this first passage send the empty stable.
Luke 2

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.
(And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)
And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.
Day 2 - Send Joseph.
And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)
Day 3 - Send Mary.
To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
Day 4 - Send the baby Jesus in the manger.
And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.
And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
Day 5 - Send sheep.
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
Day 6 - Send an angel(s).
And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
Day 7 - Send 1 shepherd.
10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
Day 8 - Send another shepherd.
15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.
16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.
18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.
19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.
20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.
Day 9 Send first wise man.
Matthew 2
Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,
Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
Day 10 - Send the second wise man.
And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.
And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,
And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.
Day 11 -  Send the third wise man.
Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.
And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.
When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.
Day 12 - Send representations of the three gifts.
10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.
11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh.
12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.
If your nativity sets contain camels or donkeys, you may want to send them on Day 9 and end with the third wise man especially if the wise men are already carrying their gifts.
My daughter in law is having a great deal of fun hearing her friend try to figure out who is sending the gifts and why.
Blessings at this and every Christmas,
A special thank you to the family of
 Agnes Chapman (November 30, 1937- December 4, 2014)
for sharing her Christmas wish with us.

Mary, Highly Favored

And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favored, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. Luke 1:28

Mary, the mother of Jesus, seemed to be just an ordinary girl, but in God's eyes she was a princess. She demonstrated the qualities of a girl who was highly favored in the eyes of God.

This week I would like to recommend Raising a Young Modern Day Princess by Doreen Hanna and Karen Whiting. Have you noticed that no two children even in the same family have the same personalities? The authors of this book help us understand the differences in our children's personalities and how to tap into those personalities to encourage our own princesses to grow in the Lord.

The book is filled with activities to help our daughters grow in the fruit of the Spirit. It's not just a book for moms. There are ideas and activities for dads to help them build a lasting relationship with their daughters.

I especially like the way the book is designed with short, quick reads for our busy lives and the materials for activities are easily accessible and age appropriate.

Hey Kids:
Do you know the fruits of the Spirit?
Take a look at Galatians 5:22,23.

Here at Christmas, we often try to show love, joy, and peace by giving to those less fortunate, wishing others Merry Christmas, and singing carols of peace on earth.

But what about the rest of the year? Don't let the Christmas spirit fade with the new year.

Have mom and dad help you cut out a bowl shape.
Then cut out nine different fruit shapes.
Write the name of a fruit of the Spirit on each fruit.
Display your fruit bowl in a prominent place.
Each week choose a fruit and discuss what it means.
An example might be: How do you show love?
Write an example of how you showed love on the back of the fruit.
You could do this every day for the week. Then you would have 7 different ways to show love.
The next week choose a different fruit, discuss, practice and write.
At the end of the nine weeks, think about how this activity has changed your thoughts and actions toward others.

Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,  and hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. Revelation 1:5b,6.

We are part of His royal family if He has washed us from our sins.

Blessings,
Gail

A Tale of Candy Canes

In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. Hebrews 9:22 NIV

I'll tell this the way it was told to me, though I am sure there are others who would disagree with the story, surely no one will disagree with the message. So grab a candy cane and enjoy this sweet tale of Christmas with the whole family.

In the middle ages, when kings and queens declared and enforced the laws with the sword, a law was made that Christmas would no longer be celebrated. It broke the heart of an old candy maker who loved to see the sweet smiles of children as they enjoyed his sweet Christmas treats. He also loved Christmas traditions and the telling of the story in the churches and homes.  No one was allowed to own or read a Bible except the priests and now that was questionable under the rule of this queen. He wondered how this generation would grow up without the knowledge of Jesus if the laws forbade the telling of the stories.

As the old candy maker locked his doors for the evening and knelt by his counter for prayer, the Lord gave him an idea. It was not illegal to make new kinds of candy and he knew just what kind of new candy he would make.

All night the candy maker tweaked his candy recipes to fit the story of Jesus. As the new day dawned he set out for his shop anxious to get a start on his new candy. He would start with a pure white candy and spice it with peppermint. Then he would layer it with red candy, making a pattern of a wide red stripe and three thin red stripes. As he rolled and twisted the hardening candy, he sliced off lengths of candy and bent them into a crook at the top. The next day would be Christmas and he would be ready to share his Christmas story.

As families entered his shop the next day with faces long and sad because of the cancelled holiday, he offered them a new candy and an old story. "See this crook?" he said. "On a night long ago, shepherds stood on a hillside watching their flock by night. Angels announced the birth of a baby born to a virgin. The baby would be pure and sinless like the white of the candy cane. His father would be God the Father. The baby would be the Son of God and He would give us the Holy Spirit." The old candy maker pointed to the three thin stripes going around the candy cane. "The baby's name was to be called Jesus." The candy maker turned the cane upside down, making the J. "The big red stripe," he said. "is the blood Jesus would shed on Calvary for our sins. Taste the candy now children. The peppermint reminds us of the gifts the wise men brought to Jesus and the spices used to prepare His body for burial when He died upon the cross. His blood covers our sins and offers forgiveness. This children, is the real story of Christmas, not the toys and candy, but the coming of the Savior of the world as a baby in a manger, not just visited by shepherds but to be our Shepherd, guiding us to eternal life in Christ."

The parents were grateful their children were able to hear the Christmas story that morning and take home a reminder of the true meaning of season.

Now as you have received a candy cane, examine it for the three thin stripes, the large stripe, the taste of peppermint and the pure white candy that makes the body of the cane. Turn it to make the J and the shepherd's crook.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16

Merry Christmas,

Gail

Who is Squanto?

O give thanks unto the Lord; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people.
Psalms 105:1

You know that picture in our minds we all get of the Indian brave who walks into the Pilgrim village in the spring of 1621 to show the Pilgrims how to plant corn, and beans and pumpkin? Wasn’t his name Squanto? Or didn’t any one ever tell you about Squanto?

This Thanksgiving tale of the Indian who greeted the Pilgrims with an English “Welcome” and then taught them to plant corn and fish, always seemed to me to be just that – a tale, until I learned how God brought it all about - A slave ship sailing along a shore, kidnapping young boys and taking them back to Spain; an entire tribe wiped out by disease; a lone man returning from Europe to find no one left. There’s far more to the truth than meets the eye here. God is always taking the evil man devises and turning it into good for those that love him. The slave traders of Europe had meant it for evil against the Indians but God used it for good for the people who came seeking to worship him in a new land.

In the Bible Joseph’s brothers sold him into slavery. They thought he probably died in Egypt until they went there to buy food. Who should they find to provide for them, but their own brother, in control of all the food of Egypt. Joseph’s brothers meant it for evil against Joseph, but God had used it for good.

Tragedy seems to surround us on every hand, but God has not left us alone. He is working all things for our good. Pray for those involved in all the tragedies. Help wherever you can. Do not be afraid, because God is with us through every circumstance.

Blessings,
Gail

Hey Kids:

I remember one Thanksgiving writing a skit with my little brother of the first Thanksgiving. I'm not sure how accurate the skit was, but we had a lot of fun and the grownups thought we were the best.

After we wrote down a few speaking parts we looked for patterns for pilgrim hats and Indian head bands and vests.

Directions weren't as easy to find as they are today. We had to search actual books. No internet in our day much less Pintrest.

Researching, planning and writing are all fun when we use them for authentic writing. All that means is writing for a real audience for real reasons. Our reason was to share a historical event by performing for the grown-ups at our Thanksgiving dinner.

I chickened out until my little brother complained that we had already planned the performance and he wanted to do it. I couldn't let little brother show me up.

Have fun sharing your knowledge of God's blessings on our country. I few feathers and a little face paint can make the fun go a long way.

A Tree of Thanksgiving

That I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works. Psalms 26:7
Is your tree up? As I left school on Monday, I saw someone had pulled out the decorations. A huge tree with a few sparse balls was already going up in the lobby. Ughhh, yes, I knew there were only a few weeks left until Christmas break and we had Art Night this week, but really? Did we really have to skip Thanksgiving?
As we entered the building Tuesday morning, a spectacular tree greeted us with fall leaves, pumpkins, and scarecrows. A Tree of Thanksgiving, what a wonderful idea! We delighted in the tree all week as it reminded us to be thankful for all God has given us. It's given us time to teach the children about the Pilgrim's desire to freely worship, their struggles coming to and living in a new land. It reminded us to teach about Squanto, a man God prepared to help the Pilgrims survive. It reminded us of the freedom we have to live and worship because of the sacrifices of others.
I am thankful for so many things this year and I'm thankful for an assistant principal who created our Thanksgiving tree!
Blessings,
Gail
Hey Kids:
Did you know Squanto spoke English? How did that happen?
Did you know the support of the main mast of the Mayflower broke in a storm? How did they repair it?
Let's not rush Christmas. How can you show reminders of your gratitude?
You can make a simple tree of thanksgiving with a few green sticky notes and colored pens.
At each meal, you and your family can write one thing on a sticky note for which you are thankful.
Place the notes in the shape of a tree on a prominent wall or window.
Watch the tree grow and take shape this week as you and your family express your  gratitude of all God has given you.

Thank a Veteran

And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. Matthew 25:41
Several years ago, a teacher in our district asked his students to make Christmas cards for veterans in a VA hospital. I believe it was his dad who was willing to take the cards to the hospital. Over the years, this one small request turned into the whole school making cards. Now the entire district sends thousands of cards each year to veterans who otherwise may not receive any other Christmas wishes. There are even opportunities for parents to sign cards at school events. Some of the cards go to veterans' hospitals nearby. One of our veterans makes an annual trip to Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, DC to deliver cards.
Men and women in veterans hospitals may be far away from family and friends and find themselves alone during the holiday season. Cards from students and their families can mean a lot. Jesus said if we have done it unto the least of these our brethren, we have done it unto Him.
Parents, you may want to investigate the address of a veterans' hospital or visit one if you live nearby. Other ideas may be to send cards to someone who is currently serving overseas who won't be able to be with family this year. Your Sunday School class, scouts, home school association or other groups may want to join in the mission.
Thank you to all who serve and who have served.
Gail
Hey Kids
Making cards is fun and easy.
Fold a piece of copy paper in half.
Draw a large triangle in the center of the card.
Open the card and write your message before you decorate.
Put a small amount of glue in the triangle.
Crumple small scraps of green tissue paper and place on the glue to make a 3D Christmas tree design.
Stick colored foil stars to the tissue paper tree.
Change it up any way your artist inclinations lead you.
You may not know who gets your card, but Jesus sees and is thankful you were willing to bring the message of Christmas to someone.

Our Tears in God's Bottle

You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book. Psalms 56:8 NLT

We’ve seen so many tragedies on the news and on the internet this year - hurricanes, wildfires, earthquakes, and tornadoes. Some have lost their lives, others their homes and communities. Lately things are hitting close to home for us. Two of my friends have children desparetley ill, one from a flesh eating disease, the other has cancer. A child in our school lost a close family member to a drunk driver. No matter the storm, Jesus sees them all. He cares and “bottles our tears”, records them. Does that seem hard to imagine? We record things that are important to us. We tell the best and the worst in our private diaries. Our tears stain those recordings. Jesus also sees and feels our deepest sorrows.

I recently finished reading Blue, part of the Baker Mountain Series by Joyce Moyer Hostetter. Blue is mid grade historical fiction set in Hickory, NC during WWII. Ann Fay, a thirteen year old girl faces similar tragedies and joys just as we do. Her day is drafted and is sent to fight the Germans. Her four year old brother contracts polio. After carrying the weight of the family while mom is away at the hospital with brother, Ann Fay also succumbs to the virus.
Hostettler’s books deal with war, illness, death, loss, race relations, and bullying. She deals with each situation realistically; the fear, the ignorance, and the hateful side, but also with faith, neighbor helping neighbor, church involvement, strangers with words of encouragement.  All those things help get us through the hard times and as Ann Fay would say “make us tough as hickory.”

Hey Kids:
Is one or both of your parents deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan?

Does someone you know have cancer or some other devastating disease?

Have you lost a classmate or family member?

Have you prayed about the situation, written about it, shed tears on the pages?

Maybe it’s time. Jesus the Great Comforter stands ready to catch your tears for His bottle, knowing and remembering your sorrow.

Blessings,
Gail

"Bear" With Me

And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. Matthew 14:23

This weekend we traveled to Cades Cove in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park for a well deserved rest and a few bear hunts. The last couple of weeks I've had parent conferences, a great math workshop, a testing report to finish entering and grades to enter as well as teach 41 four year olds, all before Thursday, because we had a three day weekend at the end of the grading period. Exhausted is not the word for it.

Jesus faced lots of work and pressure, just as we do. When he needed to rest and pray and relax, he went into a mountain apart. Yes, He is God and yet fully man. His body needed the rest and He needed to spend time with the Father.

Our camping trip gave me time to hike, rest, pray, reflect, and prepare, spending time with my husband and grandson and a friend. Though my time in the mountains was busy, it was a different kind of busy, a constant prayerful busy. When we returned home, I didn't feel tired. I felt refreshed.  When is the last time you spent a few days away from the rat race and in touch with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit? There's no better place than to go into the mountain apart.

Hey Kids:

Are you sometimes overwhelmed with all the pressures of school and sports and other activities?

Do you have a special quiet place you can go to relax and read and pray, away from all the technology and distractions of our time?

As a child, my pastor had a favorite rock, where he would go to get away from the distractions.
My mom would hide out in the leaves of a giant tree where no one could find her.

My spot is my garden when I can't get away to the mountains, but there's nothing like hiking in the cool fall air amidst the changing of the colors, the ridges wrapping me up like a blanket as the sunsets on a quiet day.

Quiet blessings,
Gail

True Colors

Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, and bless the Lord. Psalms 134:2

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park has over 9 million visitors each year. I think all 9 million of us must choose the same weekend to visit. The views are amazing and no picture can ever capture the feeling of actually being there. The sound of the last cicada trying to whir, the crickets in the leafy sides, the caw of the crows, all added to the peace and drama of the real scene. Yes, there are oodles of people, but for the most part, quiet people releasing the things of this world and absorbing the beauty of God's creation.

In autumn the true beauty of a leaf shines forth. All the green of spring and summer cover up the real color of a leaf as it tries to create the food necessary to maintain the life of the tree. Green is the color of chlorophyll. As a leaf finishes its job, the chlorophyll no longer controls the leaf and the true color is the beauty we see in fall.

I got to thinking, people are a lot like leaves. We put on a front while we date or at our jobs or wherever we think it will benefit our lifestyles, but our true colors will eventually shine through. Most of the pictures were taken as we caught our breath on our way up Clingman's Dome. As we rested again at the base of the tower, a young father came up and addressed my husband who was wearing a Christian t-shirt. The father said, " I like your shirt. You must know the Lord." My husband and I affirmed his assumption. "We are to lift His name on high. We're high!" the father said as we shook hands and began our assent up the tower.

We often feel alone in our walk with the Lord, but when, like the leaves, we let our true colors show, we find there are lots of others around us who want to join us in lifting the name of the Lord on high. The cool autumn air, the quiet of the forest, and the meeting of a brother and his family, felt really good after a long hard week of work.

Friday night as we sat out on our balcony, a falling star graced the sky.

Great and marvelous are Your works,
Lord God Almighty!
Just and true are Your ways,
O King of the saints!

Revelations 15:3b NKJV

May you find rest in His marvelous works this week
Gail

Hey Kids!

Have you tried nature art?
As the leaves change, have you noticed what a rainbow of color you can find?
My kids began picking up leaves on the playground and arranging them by color. It was not my idea, but kids in play came up with an amazing piece of nature art. They chose:

  • Maples for red
  • Poplar for yellow
  • Sassafras for orange
  • Pine for green
  • Blue spruce for blue
  • Dogwood for purple

What types of trees are showing their colors in your neighborhood?
I wish I had taken a picture of the leaf rainbow my kids made.
Perhaps you could share a picture of your nature art.
What are your thoughts of God's amazing creation? Perhaps you would like to  share those with your pictures.
