The Gift of a Mustard Seed

…For verily I say unto; you, If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible to you. Matthew 17:20

Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field: Which indeed is the least of all seeds; but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof. Matthew 13:31,32

I never met a mustard I didn’t like; yellow mustard, brown mustard, Dijon, and all the varieties in between. I use the little seeds when I make pickles and I’ve helped plant them for “greens”. So when I read it grew into a tree, I thought, “What kind of mustard seed do they have in the Middle East?”

After doing a little research (http://ww2.odu.edu/~lmusselm/plant/bible/mustard.php)It turns out they have the same ol’ mustard seeds we do and use them for the same ol’ things – mustard. The difference is where they plant them. If they plant black mustard seeds in the very sunny parts of the dessert and leave it alone until fall, the plant is tall and the stem is woody. Most trees in the area are more like shrubs, big enough for birds to roost in and find shelter under the branches.

The disciples were trying to help a man with a demon possessed child. They could not cast out the demon. Jesus had earlier told them the parable of the mustard seed. He was talking about growing the kingdom of heaven, adding to the church. The man believed Jesus could heal his son. The problem was that the disciples didn’t seem to have the faith needed to deliver the child. When they asked Jesus about their problem, his answer was the need for prayer and fasting. (vs 21).

How often I go to church or witness to someone I meet without seeing results. I wonder why there was no response? Did I not say the right things? Was there something missing in the service? Checking back on my prayer life…. Did I pray for the services? Has my prayer life prepared me to witness? Ephesians 6:12 tells us we wrestle not against flesh and blood but against powers and principalities and rulers of darkness. Every kingdom must have warriors who are willing to fight. Our weapons are prayer and the Word of God.

I think I may spend a little extra time in prayer this week. It is my desire to see people come and find salvation and rest in Jesus. It’s possible I may find rest there too. Won’t you join me?

Blessings,

Gail

The Gift of a Pink Blanket

And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. II Timothy 3:15

There’s a bag under my end table, my place to stash my loves; recent copies of magazines, yarn and a baby blanket I work on at night, and an old rebound Bible, noted and underlined. Today as I tidied the living room, I placed the Bible on top of the pink blanket I had finished the night before. It looked so comfortable, so perfectly in place with the wine colored cover against the pink and white and gray of the blanket. I guess baby blankets and Bibles do go together. A mother’s lap, filled with a baby, thumb in mouth, blankie cuddled under one arm. Mother reads a story aloud to a child yet too young to understand anything except the rhythm of the verses; ye must be born again; For God so loved the world; For unto you is born this day… a savior which is Christ the Lord. Night after night. . . Eyes droop, then close. . . Mother and child. . . Sleep in Heavenly peace.

It doesn't have to be Christmas.
Wrap your arms around your babies this week and read to them Jesus.
Blessings,
Gail

The Gift of "Frozen"

I've been considering adding a new dimension to the blog. I'd like to start posting a series on gifts because the Lord gives us so many every day. Since the usual blog I post disappeared after 2 hours of work this afternoon, I thought this might be a good time to begin with a gift. Have you ever thought of a Disney movie as a gift? After reading this you may have a new perspective on viewing Disney.
Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. I Peter 2:24

There in the dusky light of the classroom, on a day of frozen recess, my little students spend their time watching as the computer reflects the light of Frozen onto a screen dropped from the wipe board. Children are entranced by yet another story from Disney. The innocent young girl, Anna, struggles to survive because her heart has been frozen by her sister, Elsa. Now the daggers of ice are claiming her body and soon she will be as still and frozen as the landscape around her. Only an act of true love can reclaim her heart. Anna’s wicked fiancĂ© makes an attempt to slay Elsa but with Anna’s last strength she wards off the blade of her fiancĂ©’s sword. Anna is left frozen; or so it seems. Everyone was led to believe that like Snow White, Anna would revive with the kiss of true love from her prince charming, Kristof. It was not to be. Anna was the one who would show the act of true love by neglecting herself for the sake of her sister’s life. As the children watched, the ice began to disappear from Anna. She awakened in the arms of her sister, weeping over her. And they all lived happily ever after.

Just as Elsa’s life was cursed with the magic of frozen, so have our lives been cursed by sin. Just as Anna bore Elsa’s sin in her body, so Jesus took our sin and bore it on the cross. Anna knew the cost to save Elsa, just as Jesus knew the cost to save me and you. The cost - Jesus death on the cross – an act of true love. Anna’s life was restored. Jesus rose from the dead. Anna and Elsa and the town lived happily ever after. So we who put or faith in Jesus, repenting of our sins, will live happily for eternity with Him in heaven.

Elsa’s heart was broken that she had caused the death of her sister. Has your heart been broken over the sin in your life that caused Jesus’ death? Have you sought the forgiveness that Jesus offers to each of us? May you live happily ever after in Christ Jesus.
Blessings on your week,
Gail
